History --------------------------------------------- 1.1 SUMMARY House Moritani became as a recognized political entity at the time of the Battle of Corrin (88 BG), when, after they threw their entire support and resources behind Shesuet Corrino, the Landsraad forces were defeated and Shesuet ascended to the Lion Throne as the first Padishah Emperor. Shesuet recognized the Moritani contribution and granted the family the planetary fief of Grumman and the baronial title, which went along with it. Since that time, House Moritani has continued to prosper through its service to the Imperium, and is noted as one of the staunchest advocates of Pro-Imperial actions. Presently, the House is just completing a time of transition as yet another new figure within the family has received the mantle of leadership; the turbulence beginning with the assassination of Galeazzo V, the civil strife of his son Cesare with the contender Vittorio, the abdication of the former, and then finally the untimely death of the na-Count Agon Moritani. --------------------------------------------- 1.2 TIMELINE Before Guild (BG) 88 Battle of Corrin brought the Corrinos to primacy over the other houses of the Landsraad and brought about the formation of the Padishah Imperium. House Moritani supported the Corrinos wholeheartedly, at an enormous cost to resources and lives, and was rewarded by the Governorship of Grumman to Lorenzo XXV, making Moritani a House Minor. 0 Spacing Guild and CHOAM combine with the Lion Throne to form the societal basis for the next ten thousand years. House Moritani is instrumental in the formation of the Spacing Guild, by selling off most of its spaceship research and development to the Guild and being allowed to continue to manufacture parts for the Guild Heighliners and developments in personal frigates. House Moritani also helps in the formation of CHOAM, and Bernabo III was the architect behind the idea for CHOAM Directorships, with the Imperium duly represented, and thus endeared the Moritani to the Imperium further as well as gained them one of the first Directorships. After Guild (AG) 283 Duke Senshisai Ginaz succeeded in forming a minor fief on the southern continents of Grumman. As a result, relations between House Moritani and House Ginaz deteriorated. 337 The Great Convention is ratified. One of the delegates was Mateo I, who worked to give the Emperor more power over the Houses. He was greatly derided by his fellow delegates, and was soon afterwards assassinated. His son, Valentinian, was granted to have the hand of the Emperor's daughter, Victoriae. Moreover, the Moritani's fief was elevated to the status of a County. This not only helped to introduce the Moritani into the Imperial bloodline; it also paved the way for the Moritani finally being accepted as a House Major. 477 House Minor Moritani elevated to House Major status, largely due to the support of Emperor Saluso III. 4796 The first kanly was recorded between House Ginaz and House Moritani. The Ginaz fief on Grumman had been confiscated with the approval of the Emperor, adding fuel to the conflict, which lasts to the present day. 9434 House Moritani forms an alliance with House Harkonnen for its kanly against House Ophelion. The alliance persists even after the Harkonnens best the Ophelions. 10,032 Galeazzo V Moritani was born to Count Francesco VII. 10,033 Agon Moritani was born to Count Francesco VII. 10,035 Ermengildo Moritani was born to Count Francesco VII. 10,053 Francesco VII, Patriarch of the Moritani, died of food poisoning. His wife, Lady Valeria, is suspected but nothing is proven. Young Galeazzo ascended to the patriarachy of House Moritani. 10,054 Galeazzo V Moritani married Anastasia Kenrick. 10,059 Melchiorre Moritani was born to the Lord Ermengildo. 10,061 Ophelia Gabryela Moritani born to Nikkolai (youngest brother of Galeazzo V) and his wife, Guglielmina. She is the eldest of their daughters. 10,064 Cesare Moritani is born to Count Galeazzo V and Lady Anastasia. Due to complications in labour, he became a lone child. 10,065 Lord Agon married Lady Isabel of House Clavell. 10,066 Valentina was born to Lord Ermengildo as a bastard child. 10,067 Rinaldo Moritani was born to Lord Agon. 10,087 Lady Isabel died due to heart failure. The family Suk determined the failure to be of natural causes; a rarity in House Moritani. 10,089 Rinaldo Moritani married the Lady Germina Venhei. 10,091 Galeazzo V was brutally murdered. The Ginaz were suspected since all evidence pointed in their direction. Cesare ascended to the patriarchy of House Moritani, and gained the title of Siridar-Count. 10,093 Civil insurrection occurred on Grumman as Vittorio, the bastard son of Galezzo V, challenged the leadership of Cesare, with the help of Valentina, but they failed. In the same year, Lord Melchiorre was found murdered. The Ginaz were once more suspected of the deed. 10,094 The Lady Anastasia was found brutally murdered, early in the year. Although no evidence was found, the Ginaz were blamed for the deed as well. Cesare steps down as the head of the Household at the age of thirty and nominates Agon as the heir to the House. 10,095 The na-Count Agon Moritani is killed when his shuttle unexpectedly depressurizes. Lady Ophelia Gabryela Moritani arrives from Grumman, to see to the business of the house while awaiting the family to choose a successor. 10,096 Lady Ophelia Gabryela Moritani is confirmed Siridar-Countess by the Emperor Erich Ladislas Corrino. 10,097 Lord Shane Padron, Earl of Turcal and House Swordmaster, faced Marquis Steffan Lear of House Ginaz in single knife, unshielded battle as the Champion of Countess Moritani. Steffan Lear was killed. Negotiations for the end of the Ginaz-Moritani Kanly began. --------------------------------------------- 1.3 Recent History The recent history of House Moritani has been turbulent indeed. Francesco VII (r. 10,027-10,053) was killed by food poisoning. His wife, the Lady Valeria, was suspected but nothing ever came of the investigations. She followed her husband to the grave not a month afterwards with an end as dubious as his. Her luxury vehicle exploded when the fuel ignited and nothing save some charred bones were ever found. Galeazzo V (r. 10,053-10,091), whose reign seemed promising after his extremely expedient marriage to Lady Anastasia Kenrick, fell to an assassin as his father did. His son, Cesare, though after a stunning political performance, suffered the insurrection of his illegitimate brother. Even though the legal Count proved to be the victor, the signs of instability were on the wall. A year later, Cesare chose to abdicate in favor of his uncle, Agon. Tragedy again struck House Moritani when na-Count Agon's shuttle unexpectedly depressurized during descent to Kaitain. This time, however, it was Lady Ophelia Gabryela Moritani who arrived from Grumman to take the leadership of the demoralized house, to pick up the pieces and set things aright. One can assume that, despite the turbulent times, the tradition of service to the Imperium will be continued with the new Moritani Matriarch as well as keeping Arrakis under the palm of this powerful House Major. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 2. Characteristics and Culture --------------------------------------------- 2.1 Summary Some words to describe the Moritani might be enterprising, cunning, calculating, and sometimes devious. However, whatever else can be said about them, they are fiercely loyal to the Padishah Emperor, and have served the Imperium well, ever since the Battle of Corrin. The Moritani seek profit and increasing wealth and power. They gain it through honorable means if they can, but have been known on a few occasions to use less-than-legal means to gain what they want, but this rarely ever extends to anything major. There could be a bit of bribery or blackmail on the side, but the Moritani only resort to such means when the economic stability and the survival of the House is at stake. The House strives for a new path to gain prestige, but there is always one thing, which supercedes all its desires loyalty to the Imperium and the Royal personae as well as to its allies. The Moritani, though enterprising, recognize the need for allies for its success, hence is the deeply rooted tradition. The very visible and unconditional servitude to the Imperium has at times caused quite a bit of enmity between them and the pro-Landsraad factions and Houses, but the Moritani stand stolidly by their beliefs. --------------------------------------------- 2.2 Views on Religion The Moritani have been, ever since the recorded history of the house, staunch and faithful Orange Catholics. They at one time spurned the Bene Gesserit as pagan, heathen, and under the influence and direction of Satan himself. However, in recent times, this intense hatred has lessened, to a degree, especially among the younger, more tolerant members of the House. In desperate, recent times, they have even been known to seek the aide of the mysterious sisterhood. There are two major deviations in their piety, however. The Moritani have, characteristically, very violent tempers. They show no mercy to those who would incite their anger, and can be completely ruthless when their tempers are aroused. The other major deviation in the piety of the Moritani is the fact that they recognize human weakness, especially their own. This explains the notorious list of internal murders, infidelities and other carnal sins. In any case, the Moritani reconcile themselves to this by a belief that they are ordained by God to serve the Emperor and that anyone or anything that would hinder their devotion has to be from the devil. --------------------------------------------- 2.3 View on Non-Landsraad Factions --------------------------------------------- 2.3.1 Bene Gesserit The Moritani were generally weary of the Bene Gesserit, though this feeling has subsided over the years. The House had an unspoken policy to never employ the help of the BG, even if it meant death. However, this began to change during the reign of Count Cesare, when at one time he was engaged to a Bene Gesserit. Ever since the arrival of the new Siridar, an even more moderate approach has begun and the use of this faction could become common. --------------------------------------------- 2.3.2 Bene Tleilaxu House Moritani is very wary of the Bene Tleilax. They have had little personal contact with them, and are quite suspicious that they might be pawns whose aims are to overthrow the Imperial House. They do not, however, have an official policy as of yet, since there has been no need for one. At present the Moritani hold the Tleilaxu in suspicion and quandary. --------------------------------------------- 2.3.3 Guild House Moritani holds the Guild in utmost regard. They do so not only out of necessity, for transportation and commercial reasons, but also because the Guild has helped to make House Moritani what it is today. The Moritani have a great portion of their wealth put in the production of personal frigates as well as some sundry parts for Guild Heighliners, and have exclusive rights to some of them. They would not jeopardize their relationship with the Guild for anyone save the Emperor. --------------------------------------------- 2.3.4 Ix The Moritani maintain the popular belief that mankind should hold dominion over machines and not the other way around. They view Ix as a necessary evil, and when the opportunity arises will purchase technology for the ever expanding industry of the planet Grumman, but nothing which even suggests at computational power. --------------------------------------------- 2.3.5 Smugglers House Moritani views smugglers as some of the lowest of the low, especially since the House has experienced commercial ramifications due to their existence on Arrakis. In general, though, the Moritani banking blood causes them to hold in revulsion anything that would help anyone (save of course themselves and the Imperium) to bypass commercial protocol and cause a loss in profits for the Guild. The Arrakeen Smugglers in particular have incurred the wrath of the Moritani, and the House is now continuing its crusade for a crackdown on smuggling. --------------------------------------------- 2.4 Citizenry It was the intention of Agon to implement several changes spreading across House protocol, the most noticeable of which was to deal with subordinates in a manner quite the opposite of that of Count Cesare. While Count Cesare never dealt personally with anyone lower than a member or representative of a House Minor or other member of the wealthy gentry, Agon had intended to even act as a Judge to the peasantry and bourgeoisie at least once a year. His untimely death prevented even that from coming to fruition. This change in dogma might have been a harbinger for a slightly more humane doctrine towards the simple, however, it also earned Agon the reputation among those more inclined to cling tightly to the "old ways" of being soft, lackadaisical, and even weak. Agon viewed himself and his nobles as both servants to the Emperor and to their people for the greatness of the name of House Moritani. This is not to say that na-Count Agon was mellow and showed less force, on the contrary when the need arose he would discipline his people as the situation warranted for their own good. It was his firm belief that a Noble's right to rule is derived by the greater good of the people, as is portrayed in the following passage: Therefore a wise prince will seek means by which his subjects will always and in every possible condition of things have need of his government, and then they will always be faithful to him. --Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince Lady Ophelia has not yet openly declared her own beliefs on the matter, though she has proven to perhaps have an ideology which falls in the middle between the extremes of Cesare and Agon. Nobility is earned by birth, but, in times of need it might also be purchased. Never one to turn her own back on the peasantry, however, the Matriarch of the noble House Moritani has exhibited signs of having a tendency towards the role of "universal mother." She has also shown a particular penchant towards meting out punishments of her own devising, and has been seen to take great pleasure in doing so. But such punishments or sanctions are never given unjustly; the Lasy has, on many occasions, been heard to mutter, "...and let the punishment fit the crime." -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 3. Grumman: Homeworld of the Moritani --------------------------------------------- 3.1 Summary Grumman, the home world of the Moritani, is the second planet in the Niushe system, close to the Imperial heart, but still far enough to require Guild transportation. The Moritani do all they can to keep unauthorized personnel off the planet, but are only truly concerned if anyone breaches the security of their estate, which is far from the polluted and congested cities and industrial centers. Changes have been made to contain the deteriorating situations of the pyons and ecology in recent years, as well as other "beautification" initiatives. --------------------------------------------- 3.2 Ecology Grumman is a world much like the forgotten planet of Terra, but with a much wider strip of temperate weather from both sides of the equator, with alien plants aplenty. The central area of the planet is almost continually bathed with light and is considered warm, even in the dead of winter. Naturally, this phenomenon formed a very interesting pattern in the evolution of plants and other life forms, which rely on the sun for survival. There are two moons orbiting the planet, one of which is imaginatively called Luna and the other Palma. The planetary surface is calculated at 612,782,009 sq. Km. of which just about three-quarters are taken by water. There are four major oceans: Asparax, Milonai, Navothai and Zamai. These oceans form six continents, which are Caco, Grumman, Ors (North Pole), Paerrus, Syme (South Pole) and Nicanor. Grumman, by far the largest continent, is considered to be the forbidden estate of House Moritani. None are allowed to enter it without approval of the Siridar. This is true even to those who wish to visit the summer Capital of Citamateo, which is a lavish and luxurious city on the southern tip of the continent. The famed Palazzo Moritani could be found in the center of the continent surrounded by pristine wilderness, which contains most of the interior of the landmass. This area is kept as a monument, untouched by man or technology, as it is here that the original fief of the Moritani was created in BG 88. A law has been enforced stating that no building can be taller than the spire of the Moritani palace, and no private residence is to be more costly than it was to build the estate. The Moritani are proud beyond measure of their fine Palazzo, and keep it isolated so that it isn't marred by the pollution which chokes the rest of the planet. There is one major exemption to the protective immigration law of the House to the eastern provinces of the continent. Over the years, these provinces became the main source of food for the planet, producing crops such as bran, corn, olives, tomatoes and livestock. Lastly, at the southern coast of the continent bordering the Navothai Ocean one can find large squadrons of the well-known Salt Water Grumman Piranha, an expensive delicacy well loved in the rest of the Imperium. Paerrus and Caco, on the Western Hemisphere of the planet, are the most populated continents, housing about seventy percent of the eight billion people on the planet. Most of the population is concentrated in the surrounding coastline, where most of the industry can be found. Years of industrialization have taken their toll on the ecology of these continents, causing the luxuries held in such high regard by the ruling house to be overshadowed by cities which are so darkened by smog that at times it is very difficult to even see the sun. In the past few years, after the apocalyptic warnings of several geologists, there have been measures taken to save the planet from an ecological disaster. Though, real improvements may take several more years to become readily apparent. House Ginaz once held most of Nicanor (before it was named such), however, the lands were conquered by House Moritani well over five thousand years ago. To show their contempt, the Moritani renamed the continent to Nicanor (meaning 'victory monger' in the ancient tongues) and moved their winter capital, Lucasto, to this southern landmass. Its previous name has been completely forgotten, as all records were changed to reflect the new name. The continent is primarily used to extract raw materials for industries on the other continents and therefore is less marred by pollution, but is relatively less wealthy. --------------------------------------------- 3.3 Economy Grumman has one of the most dynamic economies of any planetary fief in the Imperium. It is a major trading and industrial center and is renowned for its production of personal frigates as well as parts for Guild Heighliners. Grumman is also noteworthy for its role as one of the Known Universe's main centers of publication, and puts out countless volumes of millions of works every year. One of the few banks, which are not solely owned by the Guild, could be found on the planet. Moreover, with the Moritani's hold on Arrakis, one could also find the most important Spice markets, which CHOAM maintains in the Imperium. Wages are not good in most professions, as the Moritani cut all the corners they can in the interest of profit. However, they institute incredibly generous social programs on their home world, paying people to have children and seeing to it that crime and disorder stay to a minimum. This costs the Moritani much less than raising wages, and makes the citizenry think they are doing much more. Thus Grumman can boast one of the most peaceful atmospheres of any of the planets in the Known Universe. --------------------------------------------- 3.4 Government In the last several years, with the rise of power of the former na-Count Agon, a major reformation in the administration began. Whilst the former rulers of the House relied on their nobles to conduct the business of state, Agon demanded that professional intendants would take control over the provinces of the planet. This centralized form of government was intended to dissolve the feudal regime, which was prominent for so many years. The reformation did not dissolve the status of the nobility, but rather created a new caste of the upper class who are both educated and loyal to the Siridar. Throughout history, when such a reformation had been made, the end result was the creation of an absolute monarch, which was indeed Agon's aim. Perhaps Lady Ophelia will continue to push towards this goal, picking up where Agon's untimely death ceased his activities. To date, she's certainly done nothing to reverse the reformations made under the previous, brief regime. Naturally, there were those who opposed such a reform, however, since this reform was made gradually, the blow was not a sudden one. Any discontents were dealt with swiftly. Perhaps Agon had more supporters than he thought, for many of these dealings were not his doing. As part of the meritocratic regime, a High Council of the house was formed, which is called the Consistory, including advisors on matters of the interior, state, war, and trade. The Consistory includes the following positions, and their duties: High Councillor of State Under the jurisdiction of the High Councillor of the State are the dealings with the rest of the Landsraad houses, as well as the Emperor's court, Guild and the like. Usually, when meetings are of an economic nature, a joint delegation of the High Councillors of State and of the Mercature will be sent. High Councillor of the Mercature This could quite possibly be one of the most important roles within the Consistory. At least, this is true from a business person's standpoint. This advisor deals in the realms of CHOAM, taxation, trade, and other items carrying influence over the House's economic well-being. It is expected that this advisor will closely supervise any trade delegation, financial negotiation, or diplomatic discourse having an impact upon the House's finances, as well as enforce any directives, edicts, declarations, or laws relating to the House's finances or taxation. High Councillor of the Interior In order to maintain law and order, the Countess has appointed the High Councillor of the interior. Under his jurisdiction are justice and the public peace, as well as some internal security issues. Among the other duties of the High Councillor, he is also the head of the police force, therefore the overt security forces are under his command. High Councillor of War Naturally, the military is under the High Councillor of War. However, it must be noted that the House differentiates between internal security and military. This important figure is in charge of crushing Moritani's enemies and any other external threats to the House. In addition to the Consistory, other high-level functionaries also report directly to the Countess: Chancellor The Chancellor, essentially, is the right hand of the Countess. He oversees her schedule and agenda, as well as her personal staff and household. Though not a member of the Consistory, the Chancellor's presence is expected at all gatherings of the Councillors, even in meetings between the Countess and individuals. In times of vacancies within the Consistory, the Chancellor, in addition to his normal duties, will fulfill all responsibilities of the empty office(s). It is generally preferred that the encumbant be a Mentat. Swordmaster The Swordmaster maintains responsibility for the personal security of the Countess and her immediate family. To this end, under his command is the elite corps of guard known as 'Du Suveryard.' Mentat A secondary personal advisor of the Siridar (if not already filling the office of Chancellor), the Mentat is treated in the same level as those in the Consistory, with some prerogatives. Hence usually he is present in the Consistory sessions. It is to be expected that he also employs his own informants and operatives. Nobles who are not part of the administration possess power only in name and, at times, possess some rented land of economical value. However, one must take great care to notice that the Imperium at large did not have the same reformation, hence theoretically, the prestige and power of the nobility yet supersede that of the inner-administration of the House. --------------------------------------------- 3.5 Heraldry Heraldry is the system of describing coats of arms. The primary Moritani coat of arms, under this system, would be described as "white a fleur-de-lis murrey." In plain English, that would be a burgundy (also known as bordeaux, or 'Imperial purple') fleur-de-lis on a white background. The house colors, however, are black and burgundy. It is expected that all family members and retainers will wear the family crest at all times. A secondary sigil of the burgundy fleur-de-lis on a black shield is also acceptable. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 4. Faction Members --------------------------------------------- 4.1 Family Members Ophelia Gabryela Moritani Siridar-Countess Ophelia is the current Siridar-Countess of House Moritani. Born in 10,061 to Nikkolai, youngest brother of Galeazzo V, and Guglielmina, Ophelia is their eldest child. Her tutelage began at an average age, and she was solely schooled within the family's home, despite the opportunities available to her by attending one of the Bene Gesserit finishing schools. Seeing that this child had a mind for business, her father took her in hand himself eventually, to let her see the runnings of the vineyard. She caught on quickly, as it was suspected she would, and was able to successfully handle a majority of the business. But then, there was the civil war, and in an incident Nikkolai was blinded. Ophelia took on all of the operations then, and she did so quietly. After all, business is a man's profession, and it wouldn't do to rock the boat so severely. Not at first, anyways. She is as yet unmarried, and has no children. It is expected that she will soon marry, however, as a betrothal has just been announced. Baroness Demiana Forlani Volaterin Demiana is the third, and most rebellious, daughter of Nikkolai Moritani and his lady wife. Father to four daughters, Nikkolai chose his eldest, Ophelia, to inherit the family business. The other three girls were sent to a boarding school of sorts for several years. Upon her return home, Demi was informed that a marriage had been arranged for her, to Baron German Volaterin of Senco. She was not overjoyed. In the end, she submitted under duress (and large doses of medications similar in property to anti-depressants), was married to the young Baron, and shipped off to live with him. It took her quite a while to make peace with her situation, and with her husband, but she came to love him over the years they were together. A tragedy claimed the Baron's life, as well as the life of Demiana's firstborn son, Hamilton. The death of the Baron was even more tragic, because he never saw the daughter Demi bore him just months afterward. To Kaitain she has come, at the invitation of her sister, the Countess. Lord Anatole Dominic Ciccolini Anatole was born on Grumman, to a cousin of Galeazzo V, and as such, knew a life of wealth, luxury, and education. From an early age he was a bright boy, and as he grew older, he matched his intelligence with a wit, charm, and handsome featured face that gave him a reputation as a heartbreaker and playboy. Upon returning to his familial estate, he spent a few years increasing their holdings before he mysteriously dissapeared, to return some years later, finding his family dead and he the inheritor of the fortune. Becoming something of a socialite, he grew in prosperity before being called to Kaitain to serve the Countess Ophelia. Lord Rinaldo Moritani Rinaldo (b. 10,067), who married the Lady Germina (Augustus II Venhei's daughter), was expected to play a major role in the court of his father, Agon, but Agon's untimely death has led to great instability in this wing of the family. If Rinaldo can overcome his grief, perhaps he will again take a prominent place, this time in the court of the Countess. Lord Rinaldo's marriage to Lady Germina was declared void by the Countess in 10,097, presumably at the Lord's request. Few details about the incident are known publicly. Lady Sophia Angelina Moritani The daughter of the late na-Count Agon Moritani, Sophia has left a trail of broken hearts (and sometimes corpses) everywhere she has passed. After Agon's death, she seems to have taken up wearing black permanently. Not much is known about her past, save that she was once engaged, and her fiance turned up dead, victim of a poisoned thorn on a rose. She is rumored to have a small but efficient network of spies, and it is well known that she is accustomed to getting her way ... especially from men. She arrived on Kaitain very suddenly, having resided on Grumman for her entire life. She was summoned to assist her brother Rinaldo, so recently divorced, but she does not seem at all displeased with her lot. Kaitain is, after all, where the proverbial action is, and she is intrigued with the opportunity to more closely study her cousin Ophelia, a powerful woman in her own right. Lord Ermengildo Moritani Ermengildo (b. 10,035) was Agon's brother and was once the trusted advisor of Count Cesare. Very shortly after the Countess' arrival on Kairain, an incident occurred between him and the Emperor, in which insults were traded. The Countess learned of the affair, and has ostracized Ermengildo and his children from the family, with their names to be stricken from all family records. Furthermore, it has also been decreed that his name is not to be spoken in her presence, under penalty of similar banishment. He has since taken on his mother's name, and Minor House - de Bourboun, and seeks another Siridar to take him in. The man has not been seen since, and it is unknown whether another House accepted him in. Lord Cesare Moritani Cesare (b. 10,064) is the former Siridar Count Moritani. He abdicated in favor of his uncle, Agon, and since then became a minor player in the House's politics. The sudden relinquishing of the Siridarship raised many brows, and more than a few have speculated on the true facts behind the incident. But it is a matter that has not been spoken of, at least, not openly. Cesare has since taken up residence under the hospitality of House Harkonnen in the Harkonnen embassy on Kaitain. There are many other family members, especially since House Moritani is one of the most ancient Houses in the Imperium. --------------------------------------------- 4.2 Family Retainers Wilhelm Christian Falkenberg, Baron of Nicanor Chancellor, House Mentat Being born into a noble family does not necessarily guarantee being gifted with the attributes of a true leader. However, the Falkenberg family seems to have a knack for producing strong, intelligent, and skillful heirs. Wilhelm is no exception to this rule. Born in 10,060 to Baron Otto II and Baronness Melynda Falkenberg, he was prepared from birth for the tasks that would lie ahead of him. Upon reaching the appropriate age, Wilhelm was sent off to Mentat training, as have the last five generations of Falkenberg heirs. Although unusual in the Imperium, the wealth of House Falkenberg allows them to equip their heirs with this important training without the burden of needing to hire their future leaders out to other Houses. And well that a Falkenberg should gain this training, for throughout their history, it has been their fortune, or perhaps their design, to pick the winning horse in the many contests for rulership of Grumman. Shane Padron, Count of Antilles Swordmaster Shane Padron was the Earl of Turcal...a minor province in Nicanor which would likely be overlooked save for its rather unique and precarious production of a particular herb used in medicines and salves. Perhaps a sort of 'cure-it-all pain killer' of the day, his family has long been responsible for the care and cultivation of this 'wonder drug' and nary a smuggler or other weather or condition have harmed the production and supply in over 300 years. His father held a much higher title but the expense of putting him through swordsman school plus his distance from the area in exchange for the family 'trustee' running the fief have likely caused him a lower noble title in exchange for that of his higher service to the House Moritani. Currently, he serves as Swordmaster for House Moritani. Since his defeat of the Marquis Steffan Lear in one-on-one combat, ending the 6,000 year old Kanly with House Ginaz, he has been given a new title and its lands, Count of Antilles. Dr. Jansen Charles St. Vincent House Suk Born the second son of a minor Moritani Noble, Jansen would never inherit the seat of his father nor his title. When he was about 1 ½ - 2 years old his parents had him tested for Suk School, to give him a chance at something. He scored very high on the tests and was accepted shortly after. He spent the next 16 years studing hard and achieving high marks in all his studies. When he was interning on a planet near the fringes of the empire he realized the true meaning of being healer when he was helping refugee children with the ever-present wounds and diseases so often found with such cases. Once he graduated with full imperial conditioning in 10,075, his contract was picked up by House Moritani. He spent the next 20 years of his life serving House Moritani in various capacities, including a 5 year stint in the Armed forces and 2 years on Arrakis. The rest of the time he spent on Grumman working as an assistant to the head Suk. In 10,096 he was called to Kaitian when his mentor retired. Complete profiles of all Moritani retainers are available on the Moritani web site, http://www.availablelight.net/moritani. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 5. Faction Protocols and Diplomatic Status --------------------------------------------- 5.1 Etiquette Protocols It is one of the rules of etiquette that, in speaking with nobility, the inferior leaves it to the noble to originate subjects of conversation and never introduces any topic of his or her own, unless the inferior is speaking to the noble in Court. In order to address one who is of a superior rank, one must use the third form (see chart below) if the two are not acquainted properly. It is also a rule of etiquette that when approaching a Siridar, it is appropriate to await acknowledgement from that Siridar before speaking. All guests arriving for audiences with the Countess should be announced formally by their escort into the Countess' presence. The following list will show the correct modes of addressing the nobility informally and formally, in conversation. There is one exception: The Padishah Emperor of the Known Universe is to be addressed at all times as Your Imperial Majesty. Nobility: For Acquaintances: For All Others: Duke/Duchess Duke/Duchess Your Grace Marquis/Marchioness Lord X/Lady X Your Illustrious Excellency, or, Your Excellency Count/Countess Lord X/Lady X Your Excellency Viscount/Viscountess Lord X/Lady X Your Excellency Baron/Baroness Lord X/Lady X Your Lordship, or, My Lord Baron Earl Lord X/Lady X Your Lordship, or, (fem. Countess- yes this is correct!) My Lord Earl Familial relatives are to be addressed at all times as: Lord or Lady X Retainers of the Administrative Council* of no noble rank shall be addressed as: Master X *Note that no females have traditionally been in such a role. The Countess may, of course, deem it appropriate to drop the use of titles with her subordinates and advisors as she chooses, using instead their given names. All members of staff may request to meet with the Countess at any time. It is preferred that such a meeting be arranged by OOC means ahead of time, or even guildmail, to prevent embarrassing instances in Court, Lansdsraad meetings or other times when there are important events. A person in a position to dictate or dispatch orders is expected to do so in a professional manner without abusing one's power arbitrarily. The Countess expects one to treat others in the same manner that he/she would like to be treated. --------------------------------------------- 5.2 Official Code of Conduct Members of House Moritani are expected to conform to its philosophies and ideals. There will be times of course when role play may dictate otherwise, but in all other cases one must conduct oneself with decorum (and a generous amount of arrogance!) when in public. All Moritani retainers must wear the family crest at all times (see 3.5 Heraldry for more information). In private, retainers are expected to act respectfully to their superiors. Some characters may be given the opportunity and permission to act as representatives from the House to the Landsraad, Imperial Court, or CHOAM. In these instances they may be given authorization to dictate House policy, but are expected to keep from deviating from the House characteristics. This will only be granted to those who have proven themselves loyal and trustworthy, and will be a measure of extreme trust. To summarize this all in one sentence, your character is expected to act as Moritani as possible whenever possible. --------------------------------------------- 5.3 Instructions for Interactions with Specific Houses Major --------------------------------------------- 5.3.1 Ginaz It used to be that members of House Moritani would never be seen with those of House Ginaz save when circumstance dictates (i.e. CHOAM, Court, Landsraad, official functions or events). This is due to the Kanly which has existed between the two Houses for some 6,000 years. However, recently, that Kanly has ended, and the Countess has seen fit to create a peaceful relationship between the two Houses. Rumors also circulate of an alliance, between the Moritani, Ginaz, and Atreides. But this may be pure conjecture on the part of the rumor-mongers -- no public announcements nor evidence has been found to support such a theory. Since the Kanly has so recently ended, minor outbreaks of hostility towards the Ginaz might still be found. The Moritani people can be rather set in their ways at times. --------------------------------------------- 5.3.2 House Harkonnen House Harkonnen stands as the Moritani's greatest ally and supporter. The two houses have cooperated for well over 500 years. This relationship between them had been in its highest points ever, as the late Count Galeazzo was the childhood friend of Baron Boris Harkonnen, and the good Baron was the godfather of the former Count Cesare. The current Siridar does indeed recall the Baron Harkonnen from her childhood, as he also recalls her. Amicable relations, however, go through periods of hot and cold due to actions by the Countess and her political maneuverings. --------------------------------------------- 5.3.3 House Alvstad House Moritani also enjoys a very amicable relationship with House Alvstad, due to the willingness of said house to give aide in the Kanly with House Ginaz. --------------------------------------------- 5.3.4 House Venhei In the year AG 10,089, the previous na-Count's son, Rinaldo, married the Lady Germina Venhei (the daughter of Augustus II Venhei.) It was hoped that this would tie the two Houses closer togather. After the unexpected divorce of Lord Rinaldo and Lady Germina, relations with the Venhei crumbled. Many political analysts projected that things would never be repaired. But with the recent destruction of House Venhei by the Emperor, this seems to no longer be an issue. Whether the Moritani fall on the pro-Imperial or pro-Landsraad side of arguments concerning the incident remains to be seen. --------------------------------------------- 5.3.5 House Bajazet A new alliance is currently being bantered about with this House, despite the existing alliance with the Harkonnen. Though kanly has never officially been declared between the Harkonnens and the Bajazets, there is enough bad blood between the two houses to certainly make such a declaration no surprise. --------------------------------------------- 5.3.6 House Rastanyev House Rastanyev, known for their neutrality, makes for a good House to keep a close eye on. Frequently, in the past, they have held out until the end and then cast their lot to the winning side, thus keeping them in advantageous positions. Their current Siridar-Earl, however, seems to have similar ideals to those of House Moritani, and also tends to be pro-Imperial. They have offered their aide to House Moritani, should such assistance be needed, and could prove to be very worthwhile allies. Treat them with the utmost respect. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 6.
