Announcement: Broncalo shouts, "Folks, the town hall meeting will be
held in the Auditorium at the lower level of the OOC area. Please
start making your way here if you wish to attend."
Auditorium -- Lower Level (OOC)
A small auditorium with steeply rising seats surrounds the podium. At
the podium is a lectern for the speaker and a leather chair for the
moderator.
Sargon says, "Thanks for coming, all. I'm announcing a slight change of
focus for the meeting tonight..."
Sargon says, "As the people who originally asked for the meet haven't
shown up, we're turning the floor over to questions or concerns or
comments you all might have about the game, the admin team, the
faction leadership, or anything else you might have. Please page me if
you'd like to speak about something. I'll call on the speaker to speak
out loud and set up the order. I'd ask that we stick to the topic at
hand before going on to something else."
Sargon sits in the moderator's chair.
Sargon says, "Dominic, you have the floor."
Antiochus is about to join your location.
Dominic says, "Thank you, Sargon. My question is them based. The
Moritani won the recent kanly duel and their hatred for the Ginaz is
great. This goes back to when I first joined the mush in 1999 and
Bernh killed their mentat, Juhren. Now, icly, after all this time they
have won. Why would they not want to either destroy House Ginaz or
reduce it to near House Minor status?"
Dominic says, "obviously, i do not want the House destroyed."
Broncalo notes Sargon is preparing the answer.
Sargon says, "There are both IC reasons and OOC reasons why, Dominic.
ICly, I can't really discuss them, as I'm not privy to the IC decision
process on Ophelia, Moritani and Nestor's behalf. Marco may be able to
provide some more light on this IC reasoning . OOCly, we don't want to
see House Ginaz destroyed and removed from the game. We're actively
seeking a faction head to replace Steffan. However, we expect that
House Ginaz will be have a different focus and emphasis than it used
to, with the Lear family being moved into a secondary position and the
Ginaz family coming to the fore."
Sargon says, "Marco? Do you want to add anything?"
Marco says, "I'm not speaking for Ophelia, but as far as I know she
chose not to have the House demoted or destroyed. She just wants her
demands met. Nestor gave her a choice of demotion of Ginaz or re-open
negotiations and bring forth a list of demands before the LHC. She
chose the 2nd option. The House will not be destroyed or demoted."
Dominic says, "ok. I was just curious, as it went contrary to every
ginaz-rp in the last two RL years of the mush."
Dominic says, "ginaz-moritani, sorry."
Marco says, "As to the reasoning, ICly I have no clue. Perhaps to show
that the kanly is over and that the acient vendetta has been quelled?"
Sargon says, "Ophelia's the Siridar; she's been in power since January
OOCly, and her character can call the shots. It's her kanly. I will
add that OOCly, Steffan's death was to allow a Siridar to exit the
game in a manner that was more exciting than some offstage 'accident'
or mishap, which has happened before. We're sensitive to Ginaz as a
faction and want to see it back, up and running and lively. It has
been none of those things lately, which we think needs to change."
Sargon says, "Any other questions from the group? We're all ears.
Comments, complaints, questions, this is your show."
Sargon says, "We were hoping to have more definitive information for you
all about the factions lately. As for an update: we are still
searching for a leader for Ginaz. We are very close to hiring new
leadership for Atreides. We have a new faction head for Bajazet,
beginning today. And sadly, as for House Locai, Richard continues to
be AWOL, which means we will probably not be opening that faction."
Satyavrat says, "Jonny. :) Nice of you to make an appearance."
Jonathan beams
Jonathan says, "Is the intention to definately keep Ginaz as a live
house, rather than say, have them be destroyed in Kanly? - which has
to happen sometime over the next 100 IC years"
Sargon nods. We're committed to keeping Ginaz part of DuneIII and we're
looking for a leader atm.
Broncalo wishes to clarify something.
Sargon says, "go ahead, Broncalo."
Broncalo says, "We're committed to the theme of Dune and the universe
created by Frank Herbert, but we are completely unbound by the events
of the novels. House Ginaz may end up being crushed at some point or
may end up taking the Lion Throne. That is all left to RP."
Jonathan says, "Thanks Broncalo. I'm reassured that the stage is open
for the Harkonnen to be wiped out imminently :)"
Pippin laughs and has a point to add that doesn't involve Harkonnen.
Broncalo says, "Best of luck clearing out that riffraff, Jonathan."
Iason gets the hose.
Sargon says, "Your turn, Pippin."
Pippin points out, "The reason that Steffan lost the duel was first and
foremost that his player couldn't stay on the MUSH anymore. It had
only a secondary relation to people's IC abilities or previous
roleplay. As such, it seemed a bit extreme to consign all of Ginaz to
immediate banishment on that one event. Thus, as Bronc pointed, we're
not trying to make sure all the Houses stay alive at all; in this
case, it was a matter of being fair to the faction. Ophelia had IC
reasons for not destroying the Ginaz, so it seemed prudent for
everyone involved that she use them."
Dominic would like to clarify a small point.
Sargon says, "Please do, Dominic."
Dominic says, "I was not complaining about the result of the duel. I
have no problem with the moritani winning, as that was the ic result.
oocly, i agree with all that was done. Icly, it just seemed strange
that as hated as the rivalry had become through all the previous rp
that the Moritani would let the Ginaz off so easily. That being said,
I have no further comments. :)"
Sargon nods. Consider, though, Dom, that Ophelia is not Cesare or one of
the previous leaders, the three previous leaders, and may have her own
motivations, view on the kanly, politics, and so on. Consider also
that if she's left you surprised ICly, then this could be viewed as a
good thing and can only make more RP, instead of reaching some
foregone conclusion.
Dominic says, "point taken"
Sargon says, "If anyone else has any questions or concerns or comments,
please page me so I can designate the next speaker."
Sargon says, "Marco, you have the floor."
Marco says, "If there is any questions I can answer or comments I can
get back to Ophelia about concerning the Moritani let me know. That's
it."
Marco says, "Thanks."
Sargon says, "Anything else?"
Sargon looks about.
Marco says, "Me?"
Pippin says, "From anyone. :)"
Sargon says, "Anyone, Marco:)"
Marco grins, "Oops."
Jonathan grins
Pippin eeps as he is accidentally assimilated into the Sargon
Collective.
Sargon says, "We were hoping to bring up some other issues, but the
players who asked are not here at present. We may reschedule another
meeting in a few weeks."
Sargon says, "Last call?"
Jonathan says, "I have a quick question"
Sargon says, "Shoot, Jonathan."
Jonathan is just being obliging, mind...
Pippin laughs.
Jonathan says, "Are you/we accepting applications for Tleilaxu, Guild or
Ixian characters? It strikes me as a bit of a shame that we don't have
any representations of these - especially since we have some good
canonical stuff to work with in Dune Messiah. That's not to say I'm
suggesting that these be considered for factions because we've seen in
the past that they didn't really work out too well"
Sargon says, "Good question. The best answer is an extremely conditional
yes."
Sargon says, "Let me elaborate."
Sargon says, "We've found that those groups work best when not run as
factions. The Guild, for instance, are way too powerful for the
average Landsraad faction. So powerful, in fact, that the vast
majority of their rp consists in supporting the status quo and
bullying the great houses, including the Corrino, into doing their
bidding. Which pretty much reflects the novels. RP around intrigue
presumes that you need something, and I need something, and if you get
what you want, I won't get what I want. The Guild always gets what
they want...so almost by defintion, there's no intrigue possible."
Sargon says, "The BT and Ixians, on the other hand, serve best as a way
to inject some mystery and excitement into this weird universe.
They're both outsiders, and occasionally intrude on mainstream
Imperial life with their various creations."
Jonathan nods "I agree.. the Guild isn't such a good example - although
probably a lot of fun to play. However the Tleilaxu and Ix, I'd
imagine, only really survive because of the services that they can
offer to the great houses. The harks for instance have BT creations,
so why not have some BT players to RP with etc. I guess what I'm
saying is, without having any of these groups represented then there
plots involving these groups are a lot less likely to happen. Which
seems a shame
Andrey has a related point.
Sargon says, "And both of those groups could supply potentially
interesting characters to the game at large. So when I say a
conditional yes, I mean this: if a player came up with a concept that
was interesting, promised to give good rp, and answered our concerns
about being played properly, then sure, we'd allow that character into
the game, either as part of a faction or an Indie. We would not reject
it out of hand."
Sargon says, "Go ahead, Andrey."
Jonathan nods "Thanks Sarg. It's late in the UK. Take care all..."
Satyavrat waves. "Night, Jon."
Sargon says, "Night Jon."
Andrey says, "Because the points of the Dune setting is intrigue, and
the BG's are, by frequent reference, the Guild-equivalent of all
things political, I feel there should be considerably more interaction
with the houses. Granted, several houses mistrust them, but they are
very important in the novels and should be a larger player in this
setting. Perhaps they should handled similarly to the BT, Ix, and
Guild? Except with a larger player presence."
Andrey is not suggesting the BG be demoted to an Admin-controlled group,
of course.
Sargon nods. "Those are good points. There are a few BG players around;
and maybe they should be a bit rare and mysterious. I think the BGs
are a viable faction. And I'd also suggest that most Houses' mistrust
of them in the game is based on OOC information from the books rather
than any IC information. In the books, they had worked themselves to
the very highest levels of Imperial society. Under Lavinia's
leadership, she had developed the faction to quite a few players.
However, Lavinia has not had much time to run the BGs lately, however,
and perhaps the faction is flagging. We'll look at ways to revive them
as a group."
Andrey nods. "I only wanted to point out the similarity to the 'special'
groups as a plot-driving force, and the need. Nothing further."
Sargon says, "I think that you are absolutely correct; they have great
potential as a mechanism to steer plots and interhouse rp. We'll look
at ways to further those goals."
Sargon says, "Marco, please go ahead."
Marco says, "How are the Guild supposed to act for person to person
interaction? To me from the novels they seemed removed sort of but not
really rude. I've only had one encounter with a Guild agent and it
seemed that I killed his robbed his family and killed his pet dog and
ate it. I was expecting him to be all that nice but it didnot seem how
the Guild acted from the novels. I'm just curious it my assesment is
wrong."
Marco says, "I meant to type, I wasn't expecting him to be all that nice
but it didnot seem how the Guild acted from the novels."
Sargon nods. "In the novels, all we see are a Guild Steersman, and one
banker. Kaitain has a special office called Liaison, existing to deal
with all the business on the Imperial capital. So there's no real
guide to tell us how Guild people should act. But see my statements
above about how they don't need anything from anyone. If you want to
travel from star to star, you have to go to them. You can't take your
business elsewhere. The Imperium exists on their suffrance. They don't
mind telling people that, at all. As for individual liasons acting
like jerks: consider also that even in a customer service job, you'll
find people who are nice and people who are impossible pricks--a lot
of variation. "
Sargon says, "The miniseries had one take on Guild guys; the Lynch movie
another. The miniseries Guild was coy and sly. The Lynch movie Guild
was just -weird.-"
Marco laughs, "Yeah. Cool. I understand."
Shaheena . o O (Like a good deal else in the Lynch film, bless his
twisted little heart)
Sargon says, "Other questions? Comments? Anything at all. please page
me."
Pippin grins. "We have a desperate man here, folks."
Sargon says, "Octavius, go ahead."
Sargon pokes Pippin. "I'm just trying to make sure no one gets left out.
Unless you want to see Pippin ride a unicycle and juggle for a while."
Iason says, "Only if he's juggling the lasguns as they fire."
Marco says, "With a shield on."
Pippin brings out his unicycle, his lasguns, and a Mark III personal
shield. "I can change into my polka-dotted clown costume, too."
Sargon says, "Shh. Do the act after Octavius asks his question."
Pippin nods and simmers down.
Andrey hrms.
Sargon says, "I think we're adjourned, then.:)"
Sargon says, "Thanks for coming, everyone. And thanks for the questions.
I hope we were able to answer them to your satisfaction."
Marco says, "When will we have another meeting?"
Sargon says, "Watch the bboards, Marco. Probably in another few weeks."
Andrey says, "Thanks to the admins. Take care."
